The Port of Montevideo is located on the River Plate, and geographically positioned as the main cargo transport route of Mercosur and it has become the back bone for the integration of the region on account of their privileged geographical location with competitive advantages due to their natural characteristics and infrastructure.

Montevideo port and city are geographically the centre of Mercosur, the gateway to the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway connecting Bolivia, Paraguay, western regions of Brasil (MT, MG, Pantanal) to the ocean thru the Nueva Palmira port in Uruguay.

Needless to mention the easy connection with Buenos Aires and all regions in Argentina and thru it reaching also all cities in Chile, as well as the strategic road and costal sea connections to all Brazilian main cities and ports.

After the implementation of the Port Law Nº16.246 of May 1992, Montevideo became the first port on the East Coast of South America to operate under a Free Port concept and system.

This regulation establishes the free circulation of goods in Montevideo port, without the need for formal procedures and authorizations and during the stay in the port bonded warehouses and areas, the cargo is free from all duties and taxes applicable to imports or exports.

Punta del Este is located in Maldonado state at 145 km east from Montevideo, over a narrow peninsula that divides the waters of the River Plate and the Atlantic Ocean, with a population of around 8500 permanent habitants.

The existence of huge quantity of wale in their waterfronts allowed in 1830 the catch and slaughter of these animals for more than 10 year having the Port of Maldonado as the base of the operation.

The Uruguayan coast is one of the most beautiful attractions of the East Coast of South America and specifically Punta del Este is admittedly well known city as tourism destination only comparable to Montecarlo or Portofino in the Mediterranean sea.

As a matter of fact it is necessary only to see the Punta del Este port where luxury yachts are berthed, the boutiques and malls with worldwide named brands, the exclusive bars and restaurants, confirm that the city is a constant and continuous point of reference for actors, artists, businessmen, fashion designers from Latin America, USA and Europe.

Nowadays we can say that Punta del Este like few other places in the world, has not effectively a low season. Activities such as deep sea fishing, golf, casinos, luxury residences, gardens and parks, the Gorriti island with the ruins of 1700’s fortification, the Wolves island with the sea wolves reserve, all these natural beauty made Punta del Este to be one of the most sophisticated places in South America.

Nueva Palmira, is located at the kilometre Zero of the Waterway Parana-Paraguay which added to the facilities of been in the Free Zone plus the access conditions from the River Plate thru the Martin Garcia channel, make Nueva Palmira to be the entry point to reach the hinterland of the south American continent.

Colonia is located at 177 Kms west from Montevideo along the River Plate and their main flow is due to the daily frequencies of the different Lines that operates the ro-ro ships to transport passengers, cars and cargo trucks between Colonia and Buenos Aires.

Colonia has a Free Zone where are located many industries and companies that specifically operated for the export market under the advantages of the Free Zone rules

.It is also a city of historical interest since includes Colonia del Sacramento which is an old portuguese city founded in the XVIII Century and recently recognized and named by the UN - United Nations, as Humanity Historical Patrimony.


The port has 3 piers: the overseas berth with 146 meters length and railway connection, the cabotage pier with 115 meters length and the connection pier with 200 meters length.Has seven warehouses of different capacities from warehouse “A” of 239 m2 to the “G” with 3350 m2, making all together a storage covered capacity of 8378 m2 plus 1766 m2 at open area.
