Punta del Este is located in Maldonado state at 145 km east from Montevideo, over a narrow peninsula that divides the waters of the River Plate and the Atlantic Ocean, with a population of around 8500 permanent habitants.
The existence of huge quantity of wale in their waterfronts allowed in 1830 the catch and slaughter of these animals for more than 10 year having the Port of Maldonado as the base of the operation.
